Personnel development to improve services and results for children with disabilities  

This project will prepare 30 new candidates from diverse backgrounds to work with adolescents and young adults in a Master of Arts program with a specialization in autism. The program also embeds the coursework for completion of a San Diego State University Certificate in Transition and an approved sequence of courses as a requirement to be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Activities of this project include: (a) recruiting and preparing 30 candidates from diverse backgrounds to work with adolescents and young adults with autism and their families; (b) providing target preparation in advanced knowledge and skills in the implementation of evidence-based practices using a research-to-practice model and evaluating the effects of this model on the progress of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD); (c) preparing 10 special educator mentors with advanced knowledge in ASD and skills in coaching and research to support novice teachers in the field; (d) implementing and evaluating a field-based, culturally relevant program that uses the resources of collaborative partners including identified mentors/trainees; (e) monitoring, evaluating, disseminating, and institutionalizing program features and effective strategies; and (f) providing a minimum of 65% funding support for student support.
