Description

The goal of this project is to evaluate the feasibility and usability of social robots for promoting the joint attention of infants and toddlers with autism, Down syndrome, and other attention-deficit related disabilities to improve the children's interaction skills that are known to be important for early communication and language development. Activities of this project include: (a) developing procedures and guidelines for using socially interactive robots as a technology-based approach to early intervention; (b) testing the feasibility and effectiveness of using robots as part of everyday family activities with infants and toddlers with disabilities; and (c) developing a promising technology-based approach to early intervention that is suitable for Phase 2 field-testing to determine its effectiveness for improving the joint attention and early communication outcomes of infants and toddlers with disabilities.
