An evaluation of behavior sampling procedures for event recording

Description

Description

Continuous data collection may not be efficient or possible in some settings providing treatment for persons with ASDs, and although behavior analysts use behavior sampling procedures that are thought to be representative of behavior that is measured continuously, there has been little research suggesting how behavior sampling procedures could be used with event recording. In this study, post-hoc data were collected from eight individuals with autism. Microsoft Excel® pivot tables were created to calculate the number of target responses per week for eight different measurement periods, which were compared to continuous data collection. The results demonstrated that continuous and observational samples of behavior were highly correlated, and visual inspection of graphs suggested that reducing the number of hours of data collection per day by 50-66% did not result in any significant loss of information that would be used for clinical decision-making.

Yellow dot: Objective has some degree of funding, but less than the recommended amount. 4SC. Test safety and efficacy of at least five widely used interventions (e.g., nutrition, medications, assisted technologies, sensory integration, medical procedures) that have not been rigorously studied for use in ASD by 2012.
