Project Title

Face processing and brain function associated with autistic symptoms in fragile X

Principal Investigator

Principal Investigator

Dalton, Kim

Description

Description

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most commonly known genetic disorder associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, controversy exists as to the nature and mechanisms of the underlying deficits in social/emotional processes in FXS versus autism. The aim of this project is to investigate the commonalities and differences in underlying neural circuitry of social and emotional processes in FXS and autism. The neural circuitry data will be related to behavioral measures, such as gaze fixation and the behavioral domain and severity of autism characteristics, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measures during a facial-fear processing task.

Question 2: How Can I Understand What Is Happening?

Strategic Plan Objective

Strategic Plan Objective

Yellow dot: Objective has some degree of funding, but less than the recommended amount. 2SD. Launch three studies that target improved understanding of the underlying biological pathways of genetic conditions related to autism (e.g. Fragile X, Rett syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex) and how these conditions inform risk assessment and individualized intervention by 2012. IACC Recommended Budget: $9,000,000 over 5 years.
