Description

Description

This grant provides support for an NIH Autism Center of Excellence (ACE). Neurochemical, behavioral, and genetic evidence implicate serotonin dysfunction in autism, specifically in restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs). Recently described mutations in a serotonin transporter gene reveal a common pattern of elevated serotonin transporter activity and a phenotype of autism with RRBs or obsessive compulsive disorder. In this research project, twenty-five serotonin related genes will be studied in 250 ASD children rigorously screened using ACE and Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R) criteria to determine association with autism, specifically for Insistence on Sameness (IS).

Strategic Plan Objective

Green dot: Objective has greater than or equal to the recommended funding. 2SG. Support five studies that associate specific genotypes with functional or structural phenotypes, including behavioral and medical phenotypes (e.g., nonverbal individuals with ASD and those with cognitive impairments) by 2015.
