This project will train 40 highly qualified candidates over four years to work in a culturally responsive manner with special attention given to the growing need for teachers skillful in the areas of autism and inclusion. The specific objectives include: (a) recruit and train cultural and linguistic highly qualified Early Childhood special educators; (b) collaborative training with family and community agencies; (c) identify and train seven university supervisors in the 10 counties of the Central California region; (d) prepare candidates with concentrations in autism and inclusion; and (e) monitor, evaluate, and institutionalize program features, strategies, and outcomes to assure effectiveness and future support. This project is designed upon evidence-based best practices in the field of Early Childhood Special Education. The project is also aligned with diverse community partners such as the Santa Clara Family Resource Center, Friends of Children with Special Needs Organization, Organization of Special Needs Families, Early Education programs and many school districts. Participants will receive comprehensive training (including online coursework) in all the areas of early childhood special education with specific concentration in the areas of autism, inclusion and cultural responsiveness.
