Description

Description

This project will prepare teachers with research-based knowledge and skills to meet the needs of students with severe cognitive disabilities. Further, the project will expand the Multi-University Consortium from 7 state institutes of higher education to 9. As a result it will further expand access to courses that meet the requirements for state endorsement in severe disabilities for current and preservice teachers, as well as help those teachers develop the knowledge and collaborative partnerships to effectively instruct students with severe cognitive disabilities. Specifically, the project will: (a) recruit current and preservice teachers with disabilities, from rural areas, and from underrepresented groups for application to the program; (b) present research- and evidence-based content and pedagogy; (c) increase teachers' knowledge and skills to meet the needs of students with severe cognitive disabilities; and (d) assist participants in acquiring state endorsement in severe disabilities and subsequent employment. Courses will be offered through synchronous audio and video sessions (allowing 'face-to-face' sessions) using PolyCom units and some on-line modules using VISTA-WebCT, a course-management system that facilitates the creation of sophisticated web-based educational environments. The use of this technology and this multi-university model allows the project to reach a wider teacher population. Additionally, tying the requirements of the field-based experience directly to course content and providing technical assistance to a faculty member at each participating school ensures that participants have supervised experiences implementing research-based practices with students who have significant cognitive disabilities in inclusive contexts. To aid in the application of the knowledge, the supervising faculty members at participating schools will have back-up support from experts at the six regional Centers on Autism and Related Disabilities, as well as other collaborative partners.
