Description

Description

The purpose of this project is to support the preparation and certification of 40 teachers in low-incidence who are prepared to collaborate with families, general educators, related service providers, and other school personnel to assure that students ages 6-21 with mental retardation (significant cognitive disability) and other low-incidence developmental disabilities (autism, multiple disabilities) learn core academic content from the general education curriculum and achieve their individually determined Individualized Educational Program (IEP) goals. Specifically this project will support: (a) tuition wavers and other support for scholars (65-66% of budget); (b) coordination of the program with other graduate and undergraduate programs at UNH, and with personnel development efforts throughout the state; (c) high quality project administration and evaluation; and (d) national dissemination of project results. The program's curriculum is based on teacher competencies in a variety of evidence-based practices related to supporting students to access and make progress in the general education curriculum in the general education classroom. The project will be administered by the University of New Hampshire's (UNH) Institute on Disability (IOD) and UNH's Department of Education with a strong endorsement from the New Hampshire Department of Education (SEA). The project will actively recruit individuals with disabilities to enroll in the training program and will hire individuals with disabilities and parents to co-teach in the program. Scholars will also be recruited for application to the program from three communities with high percentages of traditionally underrepresented groups including Lowell, MA; Lawrence, MA; and Manchester, NH. Evaluation of the project's effectiveness will document acquisition of competencies by scholars and describe a variety of educational outcomes achieved by the scholar's students. The curriculum and strategies for recruitment and evaluation will be disseminated nationally via print, downloadable web documents, journal articles, and conference presentations, all designed to meet accessibility standards.
