Project Title

To study the relationship between myeloperoxidase (MPO) deficiency and probiotic therapy in autistic children

Principal Investigator

Principal Investigator

Russo, A.J.

Description

Description

This study assessed serum myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels in autistic children with severe gastrointestinal (GI) disease and associated inflammatory GI disease, including ANCA and ASCA, as well as severity of disease, previously seen in a subgroup of autistic children. It also tested the hypothesis that antifungal therapy might be associated with MPO deficiency in these patients. The study monitored inflammatory markers of patients, pre- and post-probiotic therapy, using three types of priobiotiocs: (1) Lactobacillus only, (2) Bifidobacteria only, and (3) Multi-strain.
