Description

Haploinsufficiency (when there is only a single functional copy of a gene) for BDNF, the gene which encodes brain-derived neurotrophic factor, is associated with higher prevalence of childhood obesity. BDNF plays an important role in neuronal development and Bdnf+/- mice are not only hyperphagic (excessively hungry) and obese, but also display learning deficits, behavioral abnormalities, and decreased thermal pain response. This project aims to investigate the levels of BDNF in children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other conditions associated with childhood obesity or cognitive impairment in order to identify the involvement of BDNF in these disorders.
