Description

Description

Responding to the critical need for special educators with expertise in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), Project CAT will initiate and implement a modified Master's program designed to provide advanced training of teachers, resulting in a Master's in Special Education, with an emphasis in ASD. The project will recruit, educate, retain, and support 56 special educators (4 cohorts of 14) who are currently teaching or who are interested in teaching students with ASD. The project will implement newly modified coursework that incorporates research-based practices with integrated training and practice opportunities in order to enhance the skills of special education teachers. In Project CAT, candidates will be mentored by (a) an adult with a disability in order to gain a full understanding of disability culture and disability rights, and (b) a professional educator with at least three years of experience in the classroom working with students with ASD. Candidates will also participate in an Action Research Project involving students with ASD and present their research at the annual university research conference. The project will be evaluated, and findings will be disseminated nationwide. Of the total funding, 65% will go directly to student support.
