Identification of candidate serum antibody biomarkers for ASD

Description

Description

Immune system dysfunction has been reported in many studies of autism spectrum disorders, and often these alterations have been associated with autoimmunity. Notably, some studies report the generation of antibodies reactive against brain and central nervous system proteins in the blood of people with autism. Based on their previous work on Alzheimer's disease, Dwight German and his colleagues plan to identify antibodies that are elevated in the blood of individuals with autism, using a novel approach — a combinatorial peptoid library — that has been recently developed at the University of Texas. These antibodies could serve as biological markers, or biomarkers, for autism spectrum disorders, which would be very useful for early identification and targeted therapeutic intervention. Such markers could also significantly improve the prognosis for patients with autism and contribute to the development of prevention strategies. In the future, these data could be supplemented with a much larger autism dataset, perhaps even distinguishing among different phenotypes within the autism spectrum.

Strategic Plan Objective

Yellow dot: Objective has some degree of funding, but less than the recommended amount. 1LB. Develop at least five measures of behavioral and/or biological heterogeneity in children or adults with ASD, beyond variation in intellectual disability, that clearly relate to etiology and risk, treatment response and/or outcome by 2015. IACC Recommended Budget: $71,100,000 over 5 years.
