Description

Description

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are defined solely in terms of behavior, and their diagnostic symptoms have presented a challenge in developing mouse models that facilitate research on the biology of these disorders. In this study, repetitive behaviors will be analyzed in mice with mutations in a number of candidate genes for ASD. These genes include Engrailed 2, Reelin, fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1), methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2), oxytocin, and arginine vasopressin 1b receptor, which have all previously shown associations with deficient social behaviors or enhanced representation in ASD or related conditions. This research will integrate a detailed evaluation of behaviors potentially related to ASD with analysis of the effects of mutations in genes that may be related to these disorders.

Strategic Plan Objective

Strategic Plan Objective

Green dot: Objective has greater than or equal to the recommended funding. 4SB. Standardize and validate at least 20 model systems (e.g., cellular and/or animal) that replicate features of ASD and will allow identification of specific molecular targets or neural circuits amenable to existing or new interventions by 2012. IACC Recommended Budget: $75,000,000 over 5 years.
