Project Title

Development of a novel biomarker test for autism risk screening

Principal Investigator

Principal Investigator

Svarovsky, Sergei

Description

Description

There are currently no consistent biological markers for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and diagnosis is based upon analysis of behavioral traits and developmental history. The researchers have previously identified and validated a set of protein biomarkers for autism risk in the plasma of women from a large cohort of mothers of children with autism and unaffected controls. The current research is geared towards developing a diagnostic product based on an assay for these biomarkers. This will be able to predict the risk of having a child with ASD, prior to pregnancy, especially in those mothers who have at least one child with ASD and are at elevated risk of having a second child on the spectrum.

Strategic Plan Objective

Strategic Plan Objective

Yellow dot: Objective has some degree of funding, but less than the recommended amount. 1SA. Develop, with existing tools, at least one efficient diagnostic instrument (e.g., briefer, less time intensive) that is valid in diverse populations for use in large-scale studies by 2011. IACC Recommended Budget: $5,300,000 over 2 years.
