Description

This project will increase the numbers of well-qualified higher education faculty who have the skills and knowledge to improve research, teacher training, and educational outcomes for high-need students identified with severe disabilities or autism in grades K-12, including secondary transition programs. Activities of this project include: (a) collaborating with the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools District, which has 76,000 students of which 80% are identified as low-income; (b) arranging internships in high-need, low-performing Metro schools or research sites; (c) collaborating with experts in autism, intellectual disabilities, severe disabilities, and research methodology; (d) rotating internships and seminars that address competency building across research, teaching, and service experiences; and (e) conducting research collaborations between Special Education faculty and students that result in high-quality publications leading to academic careers in special education.
