This project will prepare five leaders who aspire to faculty positions in special education and can conduct research and prepare teachers for students in Grades K-12 with a range of disabilities or risk of developing disabilities, including learning disability, intellectual disability, autism, and/or status as an English language learner. METHOD: Activities of this project include: (a) developing expertise through courses, an ongoing Professional seminar, research in low-income public schools, teaching practica, and a set of specific competencies to be demonstrated before graduation; (b) providing multidisciplinary training that draws on the expertise of special education, educational psychology, methodology, and medical faculty across the university system; (c) preparing scholars to provide inservice and preservice preparation for teachers of students with high and low incidence disabilities (especially those served in high-risk settings); (d) conducting and publishing scholarly research that furthers knowledge and improves practice; and (e) providing 83-89 percent of funds for student support.
