According to autistic people, parents and professionals, understanding ways to deliver appropriate and person-centred employment support is their 8th highest research priority.15–20% of autistic adults are in full-time employment, but according to the National Autistic Society, 79% of autistic adults who do not work or are on benefits want to work. The failure to get autistic people into work is something which has a demonstrably negative effect on quality of life in a group of people who commonly have unique and valuable skillsets. In addition, those autistics that are in full-time work are often in poorly paid, low-skill jobs which do not necessarily reflect the competencies of the individual. In recognition of this priority area, Deutsche Bank has agreed to work in partnership with Autistica and Ambitious About Autism to offer six paid 3 month work placement opportunities for recent UK-based graduates on the autism spectrum. It has been agreed that research is required to understand the challenges and advantages of this scheme, as well as its impact on the confidence and future employability of the interns.
