Olivocerebellar circuitry in autism  

Autism is a developmental disorder and affected individuals have alterations in brain function disrupting their ability to perform particular motor and cognitive tasks. The main long term objective of this project is to determine in one major affected brain region, the cerebellum, how synaptic connectivity is disturbed in autism. This post-mortem study will conduct quantitative measures of important synaptic proteins (i.e., glutamatergic transporters and receptors) and relate these measures to the subjects' scores from the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) for reciprocal social interaction, communication, and stereotyped and repetitive motor behavior domains. Data from these studies will help identify core neural substrates that may underlie specific behavioral challenges in autistic individuals and should help guide geneticists in their search for possible candidate genes in the disorder, as well as contribute to understanding current pharmacotherapeutic treatments of autism and develop new treatments targeted to neural substrates.
