Predicting useful speech in children with autism (supplement)  

This is a supplement to a previously awarded grant with the same title. The use of communicative words by elementary school is a replicated predictor of social and employment outcomes in young adults with autism. This study uses a longitudinal correlational design to identify developmental, behavioral, and parental factors that may underlie successful acquisition of early communicative word use in children with autism. The results of this study will help researchers identify appropriate early treatment targets and inform intervention strategies for autism. Project Status

Develop at least five measures of behavioral and/or biological heterogeneity in children or adults with ASD, beyond variation in intellectual disability, that clearly relate to etiology and risk, treatment response and/or outcome by 2015. IACC Recommended Budget: $71,100,000 over 5 years.
