Vasopressin receptors and social attachment  

This is a Research Scientist Development Award supporting a researcher (the Candidate) in Dr. Larry Young's laboratory. Dr. Young's work focuses on the molecular, cellular, and neurobiological mechanisms underlying complex social behaviors. The long-term goal of the Candidate is to incorporate state-of-the-art technologies to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying individual variation in social behaviors. Using the highly social and monogamous prairie vole as an animal model, the Candidate's research suggests that the vasopressin receptor (V1aR) plays a critical role in modulating affiliative behaviors. Ultimately, these findings may lead to novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of the social impairments which characterize this devastating disorder. Project Status

Strategic Plan Objective Green dot: Objective has greater than or equal to the recommended funding. 4SB. Standardize and validate at least 20 model systems (e.g., cellular and/or animal) that replicate features of ASD and will allow identification of specific molecular targets or neural circuits amenable to existing or new interventions by 2012. IACC Recommended Budget: $75,000,000 over 5 years.
