Infants at risk of autism: A longitudinal study

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs in as many as 1 in 150 children, but is rarely diagnosed before the age of 3. Earlier detection could lead to earlier interventions and reduction of lifelong disability. This longitudinal study compares infants at risk for autism (children that have a sibling with autism) to siblings of typically developing children, following the new study participants until age 3 and a previous cohort until age 6. Experimental measures used with the new sample will focus on identifying underlying processes that may reveal differences in at-risk children prior to the onset of behavioral signs of disorder. The sample of infant siblings recruited previously will be followed as they begin school (age 6) to examine the stability of autism diagnoses and identify later-appearing developmental problems. The aim of this study is to identify changes in brain structure and connectivity in infancy that may be present before the clinical diagnosis of autism is made and indicate increased risk for development of the disorder. Strategic Plan Objective Green dot: Objective has greater than or equal to the recommended funding. 1LA. Identify behavioral and biological markers that separately, or in combination, accurately identify, before age 2, one or more subtypes of children at risk for developing ASD, and evaluate whether these risk markers or profiles can improve early identification through heightened developmental monitoring and screening by 2014.
