Neurogenomics in a model for procedural learning  

This is an individual National Research Service Award for pre-doctoral research training, which provides support for promising doctoral candidates who will be performing dissertation research and training in a scientific health-related field. FoxP2 is currently the only molecule directly linked to a developmental-onset human speech and language disorder and has been implicated as a susceptibility gene for ASD. The fellow will study songbirds to further characterize the role of FoxP2 in vocal communication. Similarities between human speech and birdsong make songbirds a unique model system to test molecules involved in language and social communication using molecular, physiological, and behavioral analyses. By understanding how the normal and mutated forms of these genes and their gene targets operate in animal models like the songbird, this research will contribute to the understanding of neural mechanisms underlying human speech and associated autism spectrum disorders. Results from this study may facilitate the development of therapeutic interventions to treat language and cognitive deficits in ASD and related communication disorders. Project Status

Standardize and validate at least 20 model systems (e.g., cellular and/or animal) that replicate features of ASD and will allow identification of specific molecular targets or neural circuits amenable to existing or new interventions by 2012.
