NM-PASS (New Mexico-Preparing Autism Spectrum Specialists)  

This project will prepare 21 highly qualified special education professionals in a Master's and licensure program with interdisciplinary and collaborative knowledge and skills based on research-based practices to effectively intervene with culturally and linguistically diverse children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. Activities of this project include: (a) designing a program to recruit and retain culturally and linguistically diverse prospective and current special education teachers; (b) providing coursework with practicum experience embedded in the courses; (c) aligning the program with standards set by the Council for Exceptional Children's Competencies for Teachers of Children with ASD in cooperation with the National Professional Competencies for Teachers of Autism; (d) preparing, mentoring, and evaluating educators with supervised assessments focusing on the provision of services to students birth to age 21 with ASD in self-contained and inclusive educational settings. Evaluate new and existing pre-service and in-service training to increase skill levels in service providers, including direct support workers, parents and legal guardians, education staff, and public service workers to benefit the spectrum of people with ASD and promote interdisciplinary practice by 2015. IACC Recommended Budget: $8,000,000 over 5 years.
