The primary goals are to: (a) prepare special educators who are trained to improve educational outcomes and quality of life for students with ASD as well as support students with ASD in inclusive environments; (b) establish an autism/ASD emphasis in the Master's of Education, low incidence teacher training program and recruit for application to the program candidates from underrepresented groups and with disabilities to serve culturally and linguistically diverse students with autism in Hawaii; (c) collaborate with school and community partners and prepare highly qualified educators in evidence-based knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions through a coordinated program of coursework and field experiences each semester to meet the multifaceted needs of students with autism and their families; and (d) retain project scholars in this high quality training program through financial support and faculty mentoring. Objectives will be guided by the following activities: (a) establish and maintain partnerships with families, the State of Hawaii DoE, local school districts and schools, as well as with private and public community agencies to support project activities; (b) recruit and retain candidates (2 cohorts of 15 each); (c) deliver specialized, evidence-based curricula, integrating coursework with field experiences each semester to develop the professional competencies required to deliver appropriate services and evidence-based practices to students with autism; (d) evaluate project activities, candidate knowledge, skills, professional dispositions, and associated outcomes for the students with autism and disseminate the program model at the local, state, and national level.
