Sustaining evidence-based practice for young learners with autism spectrum disorders through a M.A. degree program

This project will support 20 new students in the Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Special Education/Autism Specialization offered by the Department of Special Education at San Diego State University. The project will respond to gaps and weaknesses in the knowledge and skills of personnel working with young children with autism spectrum disorders. Activities for the project include: (a) recruiting and preparing 20 new candidates to work with young children with autism spectrum disorders and their families; (b) enhancing the knowledge and mentoring skills of 10 credentialed teachers; (c) providing a collaborative model of candidate education that assures that graduates are prepared to work in a variety of settings using evidence-based practices; (d) facilitating the preparation of Masters of Arts candidates and program graduates towards national certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst; and (e) supporting professional development by encouraging dissemination of student research projects through presentations and publications. The project will also prepare personnel to implement a parent involvement emphasis, including joint workshop activities, and use an innovative mentoring program to address the retention of qualified teachers and program graduates who are employed by partner school districts and agencies.
