Preparing special educators to work with children and youth with autism  

This project will train 44 students as special educators with expertise in autism, and eligible for an Oregon Initial Special Educator license and a Master's degree in special education. The overall goals are to: (a) alleviate the serious shortage of special educators who are trained to serve children and youth with autism; (b) improve the quality of services provided to students with autism; and (c) increase the likelihood that students with autism can be served effectively within inclusive settings. Preservice special educators in this autism training program will gain content which focuses on evidence-based strategies including the following: (a) behavior management and applied behavior analysis techniques; (b) communication techniques effective for verbal and non-verbal students with autism; (c) techniques for effectively involving and collaborating with parents or guardians of children with autism; (d) curriculum methods effective for children with autism; (e) techniques for teaching social skills to children with autism; (f) assessment techniques for identifying children with autism; and (g) strategies for collaborating with agency and school personnel. Curriculum content will be reinforced through practica in schools and other diverse settings in which children with autism are served. Project Status
