Kansas University: Autism and Early Childhood Education Professionals (KU-ACE)

This project will provide financial support to 20 preservice students (two cohorts of 10) each for two years in order for them to obtain the initial Kansas teaching license in Early Childhood Unified (birth through kindergarten) and a Master's degree in early childhood special education with an additional emphasis in working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim is to ease the shortage of these highly qualified, appropriately credentialed professionals in early childhood special education. Program activities include: (a) providing high-quality training and apprenticeships that are grounded in the evidence base of effective practices in early intervention, early childhood special education, and effective educational practices for young children with ASD; (b) implementation of effective strategies into real world settings that represent diverse communities in which families and their children reside; (c) placement of program graduates in early intervention/early childhood special education vacancies across the state of Kansas and the United States; and (e) enhancement of the likelihood that program graduates are retained in those positions over time by providing follow-up contact and support.
