Personnel preparation for serving children with low incidence disabilties  

This project will support 30-40 trainees in a program of study leading to a Master's in early intervention/early childhood special education and a state of Vermont certification. The various components of the program include: (a) increasing the number of early interventionists and early childhood special educators who are competent to assume roles in providing special education services to young children who have disabilities who are refugees/immigrants; (b) supporting the needs of families from diverse backgrounds who have young children with disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders; (c) recruiting trainees who represent a range of cultural, linguistic, and ability backgrounds; (d) partnering with early childhood, early intervention and early childhood special education programs that are representative of immigrant and refugee communities in which young children who experience disabilities reside; and (e) developing an innovative distance delivered program that will meet the needs of both in-place professionals across New England and other areas of the United States, as well as rural Vermont practitioners.
