Preparing teachers to teach children with autism & developmental disabilities

This project will: (a) recruit and train four cohorts of 12 high-quality preservice and inservice special education teachers including those from diverse backgrounds in high-need New York City public schools, with a particular emphasis on District 75, a citywide special education district serving more than 23,000 students with disabilities; (b) deliver coursework leading to Special Education New York State certification annotations in severe and multiple disabilities for participants; (c) implement integrated training and practice through intensive field-based experiences; and (d) establish a professional community of learners through a full academic-year induction program. Bank Street College of Education will build on its existing professional teacher preparation programs in special, bilingual and dual language education, as well as a strong network of partnerships with New York City public schools. Academic training will focus on creating inclusive environments, high levels of accountability, and access to general education curriculum for linguistically and culturally diverse children (including those with limited English proficiency) with severe disabilities in urban schools. The project will also create a network of special education teachers that will provide ongoing support for participants beyond the life of this grant. Project Status
