Preparing special educators to effectively support students identified with autism disorder

This project responds to the need for qualified special educators in the area of autism. The program is comprised of a 2-tiered approach designed to: (a) prepare students to effectively implement evidence-based practices for students along the full continuum of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and (b) provide a specific emphasis throughout the program to prepare special educators to integrate all areas of the curriculum in order to effectively assess and develop social competence benchmarks for students with ASD. Specifically, graduate students will participate in a final-year specialized course on social competence designed to provide them with field-based application of their summative coursework, including experience in a university-based secondary classroom designed to prepare high school students with ASD to successfully transition to postsecondary education.
