Project CHANGE (Children with Autsim Need a Great Education)

This project has three main objectives: (a) to recruit for application graduate students from a culturally and linguistically diverse pool of highly qualified applicants to admit two cohorts of 20 students into a Master's of Education (M.Ed.) with an emphasis on autism program; (b) to prepare candidates using a curriculum that includes current knowledge about effective practices for students with autism and their families with an emphasis on culturally responsive practices; and (c) to retain these highly qualified candidates through faculty mentoring and financial support. The project will: (a) enhance the existing M.Ed. in special education to add an emphasis area in autism; (b) prepare candidates with a 36-credit-hour degree using a curriculum aligned with established state standards; (c) financially support those students to reduce drop-outs and increase retention; (d) provide field experiences in classrooms; (e) provide multidisciplinary coursework from various departments within the college of education, as well as the specialized courses in special education; and (f) collaborate with area schools and agencies involved in providing services to students and families.
