Training of low-incidence personnel

The purpose of this project is to increase the number and quality of fully credentialed personnel to serve children with autism and severe disabilities. Pace University and New York City Public Schools will work in partnership to prepare highly knowledgeable and skilled teachers to work with students with autism in inclusive urban schools and to provide enhanced support to beginning special education teachers. The program will (a) provide training grounded in research-based approaches shown to be effective in improving outcomes for students with severe disabilities, including autism; (b) provide field-based experiences in urban schools offering integrated training and practice opportunities to enhance skills of personnel who share responsibility for services to students with low-incidence disabilities; (c) prepare personnel to address the specialized needs of children from diverse cultural and language backgrounds; (d) develop and improve partnerships with schools to promote improvement in teacher preparation and service delivery to students with autism and other disabilities; (e) equip scholars with the knowledge and skills to effectively assist children with autism and other disabilities in meeting state learning standards through utilization of a collaborative model among general education and special education teachers; and (f) provide needed support systems to enhance student retention and success in the program.
