In honor of NFCM, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. issued a proclamation to honor family caregivers. He states that family caregivers are the backbone of our Nation, making tremendous sacrifices to be there for the people who need and cherish them most. This month, we honor their selfless love and courage, and we recommit to getting them the support they deserve. They should know their country has their backs.

NFCM is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. It offers an opportunity to raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities, and increase support for caregivers. The national observance is led by Caregiver Action Network (CAN), a nonprofit that provides free education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers. National Family Caregivers Month, observed every November, honors the 53 million family caregivers in the U.S. President Biden’s 2024 proclamation highlights their sacrifices and calls for improved support. Caregivers assist loved ones with chronic health conditions, disabilities, or functional limitations, often balancing caregiving with other responsibilities. The 2018 RAISE Family Caregivers Act directs HHS to develop a national strategy focusing on person- and family-centered care, service planning and coordination, as well as caregiver education and training. Caregiving is both rewarding and challenging, often impacting financial stability, emotional well-being, and social relationships. Unpaid caregiving contributes an estimated $600 billion annually to the economy.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor family caregivers, raise awareness of caregiving challenges, and promote community education and support. Families remain the primary caregivers for older adults and individuals with disabilities in the U.S. This year’s theme, “I Care” emphasizes the importance of caregivers identifying themselves as such. Over half of caregivers in the U.S. do not self-identify as caregivers, often missing out on valuable tools that could reduce their stress. Encouraging individuals to identify as caregivers and connecting them with resources is a vital step toward addressing the nationwide caregiving crisis.
