Scientific Workshop Summary: Treatment January 16, 2008
The workshop chair, Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., remarked that the Treatment workshop participants were quite diverse and spanned the broad areas of treatment, intervention, and services for ASD. The participants began by identifying basic themes and then divided into subgroups to generate specific ideas. One subgroup focused on psychosocial treatments and services; another subgroup focused on biological or biomedical treatments; and a third subgroup considered ideas at the interface of the two approaches. The resulting research opportunities concerned topics such as: changing the developmental trajectory of ASD through early intervention; testing novel or commonly used treatments not yet studied empirically; addressing medical and psychiatric conditions that co-occur with ASD; identifying biomarkers of treatment responsiveness; compiling outcome measures sensitive to change; identifying treatments for adolescents and adults with ASD; conducting effectiveness and dissemination studies in real world communities; and, conducting cost-effectiveness studies.
